Entrance
Entrance [en-'trans], v.
1 : to carry away with delight, wonder, or rapture
2 : to put into a trance
Entrance is the Enlightenment Display Manager. And like Enlightenment, it takes beauty and customization to levels that KDM and GDM can only dream about, without the bloat.
News
2005/05/13 - Trying to make a small return to active development after a fairly long hiatus. I've removed the Nebulous and TailLights themes from CVS; they are now available here. I've also added code to support configurable backgrounds in CVS. It will default to the theme background if none is specified. It works with E17 background edjes too.
2004/10/01 - It's been a while since we updated news around here, so I thought I'd drop a few words. We haven't had a whole lot of Entrance development this year, but some important features are now in place - such as remember users, autologin, and more significantly, robust support for Xauth. I am currently working on revamping the config system, but before this is done there are several improvements to Ecore_Config that I must complete first. Once the new config system is in place, some of the most-requested features like ability to customize the X server command line and multi-display support should be available. Stay tuned. I may actually release an official beta once this is done.
2004/03/11 - Atmos has been hard at work recently adding some new features to Entrance. Most notable is the new support for managing users' icons and remembering their previously logged in session. Autologin support is also coming along but not quite there yet. Entrance also now has improved session handling and several UI improvements, especially for the Taillights theme.
2003/12/22 - Just in time for Christmas, we've got a shiny brand new theme for your login pleasure. Taillights is an excellent theme written by Atmos that illustrates how to write a proper theme for Entrance (see below for link to documentation). Also new in CVS are command-line options that let you choose the theme, geometry, display etc. as well as many bugfixes in the spawner code. The BlueCrystal theme looks poised to make a comeback as well.
2003/10/15 - Well, we're definitely overdue for an
update here. In addition to this page, please check the
Enlightenment News Page for further CVS updates and other
E-related news.
Meanwhile, we've been doing quite a bit of work on Entrance lately.
The spawner has finally been rewritten, and is now based on Ecore.
We need people to stress-test it and find bugs. Also,
Raster has designed a very
cool default theme for Entrance that follows the general design
E17's default theme will have. I will try to make some updates and
refinements to the theme over the next couple of weeks. I also
still plan to port the old BlueCrystal and Matrix themes over to
the new Edje format. The good news is that Entrance is finally
usable enough for most general use, and you're welcome to download
and try it out. Feedback is always welcome, and thanks to all those
who have sent emails recently to let me know their experiences with
running Entrance.
2003/07/27 - The Entrance UI has undergone a huge
transformation! Entrance is now based on the new Edje library,
which is essentially the ultimate themer's library. We will be
putting up guides on how to create themes and so on shortly; for
now, the codebase still needs to undergo a few refinements with
respect to the new transformation. New
features include animated objects, scriptable theme behavior and
a shutdown/reboot feature.
2003/05/12 - New Entrance page created. Further announcements about Entrance development will be posted here.

Getting Entrance
If you want to check out entrance, the recommended method
is to download it from
Enlightenment CVS. To check out Entrance, first download
and compile the required libraries. Then check out
e17/apps/entrance. From time to time development
snapshots are uploaded to enlightenment.freedesktop.org,
but these releases are unsupported and may be out of date.
Make sure to read the README before compiling.
Requirements
Before you can successfully compile and run Entrance, you must have the following libraries installed. Most of these can (and should) be obtained from Enlightenment CVS.
Documentation
Please see the README file for important information you need to know before and after installation. Other documentation and a theming tutorial can be found here.
